Opened to the public earlier in 2026, this property is home to a diverse ecosystem anchored by Aird Creek itself. The trail winds through forested ridges upland of the creek, ranging from mixed broadleaf and pine to old growth cedar swamps. Limestone and quartz bedrock promote rare and interesting plants, including tons of different fern species and many prized lichens and mushrooms. Birds, bugs and other wildlife are also rich throughout the forest. I helped out with a BioBlitz here in June, where we observed 408 species in a single day [read more]. This is a rugged, winding footpath through old, dense forest with rocky outcrops. We’ll encounter rocks, roots and mud on sections of the trail, so proper hiking footwear is a must! There are a couple short climbs and descents, which we will take slowly. You may find hiking poles to be helpful.
Hikers should pack snacks, lunch and lots of water. We will take a lunch break mid-hike. Dress for the weather and bring sun, rain and bug protection; long pants or hiking gaiters are recommended. As always, be aware of ticks and poison ivy.
