Location: West of Calabogie in Greater Madawaska
As the name suggests, this lake has limestone bedrock and alkaline water chemistry, which makes it very attractive to calcium-loving plants. Examples include woodland pinedrops, climbing fumitory and New Jersey tea, which in turn support populations of rare insects and other animals. We’ve spotted many bird species here including barred owl, brown creeper, thrushes, warblers and woodpeckers. Expect late season butterflies like monarchs, admirals and fritillaries. If we’re lucky we may also see some weird-looking caterpillars like the giant leopard moth or Canadian imperial moth. Join us for a first-hand look at this unique ecosystem.

We follow an ATV track before turning onto a footpath with some roots, rocks and elevation change. Hikers should pack snacks, lunch and lots of water. We will take a lunch break mid-hike. Dress for the weather and bring sun, rain and bug protection; long pants or hiking gaiters are recommended. As always, be aware of ticks and poison ivy.
